Although fish are an important part of our traditional diet, they are not the only source of subsistence food for the Eyak people. On land, we hunt moose, deer, bear, and birds. We also harvest many different types of plants and berries. In the sea, we harvest seaweed and shellfish, and hunt otter, seal, and other marine mammals.
Environmental pressures can affect our subsistence foods and our health. Using a combination of western science and traditional ecological knowledge, DENR works on projects that improve the health of our subsistence resources, enabling the continuation of our subsistence lifestyle. These plants and animals are an important part of our cultural heritage and our everyday health, and it is imperative that we protect these ecosystems for generations to come.
