Plastics recycling is coordinated by the Native Village of Eyak and made possible by Lynden, who provides free shipping for all our plastics. We accept #1 and #2 plastics. Please make sure that plastics are cleaned and the lids removed. The drop off location is in the two freight containers behind the Lighthouse Inn off Harborside Drive. Plastic bags are collected for recycling at the AC Value Center. Please do not throw plastic bags in the #1 and #2 freight containers. For more information visit the plastics recycling page.
NVE collects all types of batteries except vehicle batteries at the battery box in front of the post office. Consider buying rechargeable batteries to replace your dead batteries for electronics you use often. A good comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of different battery types can be found here.
The Native Village of Eyak accepts electronics year-round for recycling. Drop off is in the red freight container behind the Lighthouse Inn, next to our plastics recycling. For more information, visit the electronics recycling page.
The Copper River Watershed Project and the City of Cordova operate the aluminum recycling program. Aluminum is collected at the large dumpster in front of the post office. Please be sure to rinse out your cans and take them out of plastic bags before recycling them.
The Copper River Watershed Project, with assistance from Cordova District Fishermen United, the Marine Advisory Program, Native Village of Eyak, and the PWS Science Center, provides net recycling for gillnetters and seiners. In 2009, this program recycled 9 tons of fish net! Collection runs annually from spring until fall and drop-off sites are at the Cordova Harbor and at the City baler facility. Fishermen are asked to strip their old, worn-out nets of cork and lead lines, and place the old web in bags to be dropped off. For more information, visit the Copper River Watershed website or contact Michelle Dockins at 424-3334.
Plastic bags and "film" (stretchy plastic wrapping) is collected for recycling at the AC Value Center. Even if a plastic bag has a #1 or #2 on it, it is not recyclable with other #1 or #2 plastics due to a different manufacturing process. Please be sure to recycle plastic bags at AC, not at the NVE collection sites.
NAPA, on Nicholoff Drive next to the AC Value Center, collects car batteries and other acid-lead batteries for recycling. It is extremely important to recycle lead-acid batteries since the materials used in them are very toxic. Lead-acid battery drop-off at NAPA is free of charge.
