Pt. Whitshed

The Point Whitshed naval radio station was originally built in 1908. The environmental assessment revealed diesel range organics and lead contamination in the area. Unlike the radio tower at 14 mile, the 200' radio tower at Pt. Whitshed was still standing in 2008, 100 years after its construction.

Pt. Whitshed is a remote site, accessible only by boat, helicopter, or foot, which presents logistical challenges for mitigation activities. To date, mitigation measures have included the removal and disposal for recycling of the radio tower, filling in a deep open water pit, and extensive brush clearing. Remaining work includes the removal of concrete foundations and contaminated soil remediation.
