14 Mile

Mile 14 is one of three US NAvy radio stations that were operated near Cordova in the period between 1908-1933. Remnants at this site include radio towers, buildings, machinery, and foundations. An environmental assessment conducted at the site determined the presence of asbestos, diesel range organics, and lead.

To date, work at the Mile 14 Naval Radio Station has included extensive brush clearing, sectioning of the radio towers for transport, and removal of asbestos-coated roofing and contaminated soil from the Mile 14 power house building. Future work includes building clean-up, removal of concrete foundations, and removal of remaining radio tower steel, building debris, concrete tanks and machinery. Work is anticipated to continue at Mile 14 through 2012.
