The Native Village of Eyak (NVE) is a Federally recognized Tribe located in the Eastern Gulf of Alaska encompassing the major ecosystems of Prince William Sound and the Copper River Delta. In addition, the Tribal area includes the rich and diverse habitat of the boundary between these major ecosystems. Most tribal members reside within the community of Cordova on Orca Inlet. Tribal membership totals 580, with tribal members accounting for approximately 22% of the poplulation in this area (total pop. ~ 2,454). Cordova is a rural community accessible only by air or water. Cordova's economy currently revolves around the commercial fishing industry. There are 438 commercial fishing permit holders residing in Cordova and four out of the five NVE Traditional Council members are permit holders. Tribal members also depend heavily upon subsistence resources. With a reliance of Tribal members on natural resources, there also comes a vested interest in a healthy environment. The Native Village of Eyak is governed by a five member Tribal Council that are elected to two year terms. The Tribal Council provides overall direction to staff and represents the interests of the Tribal members who elect them. The NVE Tribal Council is extremely active and regularly participates in Native affairs at regional, state and national levels. NVE operates a number of programs with dedicated staff including the Ilanka Health Center and associated health and wellness programs, Indian child welfare,social services, the NVE Cultural Center, Alaska Native arts and language curriculum, housing, community development, tribal management, environmental education, planning, regulatory enhancement and capacity building, fisheries resource monitoring and other natural resource based projects.
